Statement of Purpose
Can we as breeders eliminate all of the genetically inherited health problems in the cocker breed? No. But by studying blood lines, selectively breeding, computing genetic odds and utilizing current medical technology we hope to produce cockers that are healthy and happy with fewer health problems than in the past. Any cockers that we sell are with the understanding that should health problems arise (other than those brought on by the new owner's neglect) we will buy back the dog for the purchase price. New owners should understand that some health problems may not manifest until later in a dog's life. This can be heart breaking, but even responsible breeders can not eliminate bad genes. A prospective owner should be aware that genes do not go away; they may skip generations before they appear.
Each of our dogs has a unique personality. They bring a lot of joy into our lives. Some have had careers in the conformation ring earning the title of Champion. Some do not like the show ring at all but excel at obedience or have a personality that makes them wonderful therapy dogs. We value our dogs, and they trust us to provide good care for them. Therefore, we carefully screen prospective buyers.
As for our breeding program, our kennel produces one or two litters each year. We are more concerned with quality rather than quantity. We do not breed for a "look" that may be currently popular but try to remain faithful to the standard for the breed.
For those who are "bargain shopping," I recommend that you keep in mind the first cocker we owned. He was a give-away, but the amount we spent on veterinarian visits, medication and special shampoos was more than the average cost of three cockers from a reputable kennel. If you cannot afford the initial purchase price of a dog, please wait until you can. We will be glad to discuss the costs of care and feeding for the average dog.
We will provide new owners with information on the pedigree, records of veterinarian visits and advice on training and grooming. The cocker spaniel breed is a very people-oriented breed. They want to be with their owners as much as possible. If you are away all day at work, you might want to consider another breed. Any cockers that we sell as pets are sold with a limited registration. We also have a spay/neuter contract. Why? We have spent time and effort to improve the breed and to breed away from as many health problems as possible. Although the peekapoo down the street is adorable, the average pet owner cannot guess at what health issues might occur in a litter from breeding the peekapoo or any other dog with a cocker spaniel.
A puppy is a commitment. It is a life that depends on you for the best of care. We sincerely hope that there is a place in your home and your heart for a cocker spaniel. |
